Blog 72 - Facebook Officiality

"Oh they're together now?"
"Yeah. It's facebook official."

Sound familiar? It's not that uncommon for people to talk about things that go on on facebook, especially since everyone has access to it, and in all honesty theres been a lot of times where we go on facebook because we're bored. We take time to creep on people we don't know, or to comment on pictures or statuses..the list goes on. Since when has facebook been the one to decide whether or not something is legitimate? I was talking to a friend of mine and she said that she feels like a couple isn't really a couple until they're facebook official. I think this is ridiculous. I mean, yes, by putting your relationship status as "in a relationship with ___" basically just lets everyone you don't really care about to know that you're in a relationship, but if you're in a relationship you'll let the important people in your lives know about it. Stacy from 7th grade band camp who I haven't seen since doesn't need to know that I'm now in a relationship with someone. I also don't need to see Timmy from 9th grade science class being all kissy lovey dovey with his new girlfriend Amanda from 10th grade English class. Facebook officiality...it shouldn't govern whether or not something is legitimate or not. In fact, I know a good amount of people that don't post their relationship statuses on facebook because they DON'T want all that attention from people that don't matter to them. Just because you're not together on facebook doesn't mean that they aren't going steady in real life. In fact, more often than not, I'll see someone is in a relationship and a week or two later they'll be single again. Come on guys. Facebook officiality is overrated and and just plain stupid in the seriousness that people take on it.

  1. Yeah I go back and forth between this view point. Part of me definitely thinks facebook is overrated and we shouldn't need to put stuff up there to feel validated. However the other side is that facebook is actually a great way to stay connected with people close to you that are far away. For example, my sisters live far away, but I'm close to them. We won't always have time to catch up on EVERYTHING when we talk or see each other. But seeing a status update or picture every once and a while really helps you stay connected. So I guess it's all about how you use facebook....

  2. I totally agree with you on the whole Facebook thing.. and I love the cartoon! Calvin and Hobbes used to be my favorite comic and I had a million books of just their comics.

  3. Calvin and Hobbes is probably my favorite. Most comic strips make me either think it's funny or smile, but Calvin and Hobbes makes me actually burst out in laughter.

  4. Yeah I think it's ridiculous because I'm "with" someone but it's not "facebook official" so some people don't consider us together.

  5. Someone told me the other day that facebook is causing some really high percentage of people to end their relationships. I thought it was funny. All this technology is getting us way to much up in other peoples buisness.

  6. Yeah, you lose a lot of privacy with all of these hidden cameras and such, but for things like twitter and facebook its YOU putting your OWN information out for other people to see...so it's kind of your own fault for letting people get into your own business. Maybe thats why people who put relationship statuses on fb tend to end their relationships...theres no privacy to their relationship as much.

  7. I agree with you. It is pretty pathetic that something has to be "facebook official."

  8. Calvin and Hobbes shows good taste for cartoons. And it's not official unless it is on Facebook!

  9. I think im the only person of our generation that doesn't have a face book page. At this point i almost consider it a point of pride not having one.
